Whiskey Deconstructed Part One: The Mash

We cover a lot of whiskey related news around these parts — from distillery tours and new product rollouts to cocktails recipes and mixologist interviews. In many of those pieces, I go through some form of explanation as to how whiskey gets made. While the process of making bourbon, scotch or rye never changes very much no matter where it’s made on Earth, new readers and new booze enthusiasts enjoy learning the classic process of creating the brown spirits.

To announce their new online whiskey recommendation service and social community, Distiller put together a set of diagrams laying out the whiskey making process in creative visual detail. Distiller offers an app allowing whiskey lovers to share their expertise and recommendations between iOS and Android smart devices. It’s a good bet Distiller users are already hip to the process of making their favorite adult beverage, but for the curious and the uninitiated, we’ll be presenting the three diagrams detailing the birth of whiskey.

Today, we begin with Part One and the creation of mash up at the top.
