Street artist Banksy has unveiled his latest artwork, sprayed on the wall of the Calais refugee camp, depicting Steve Jobs as a refugee with his belongings slung over his shoulder, carrying an old Mac computer.
The piece references the late Apple co-founder’s heritage, as he was the son of a Syrian migrant who moved to the US following the Second World War. The anonymous artist released a statement alongside the unveiling of the artwork, saying: “We’re often led to believe migration is a drain on the country’s resources but Steve Jobs was the son of a Syrian migrant. Apple is the world’s most profitable company, it pays over $7bn (£4.6bn) a year in taxes – and it only exists because they allowed in a young man from Homs.”
Banksy has now created four murals in the Calais refugee camp, which is known as the “jungle.” The UK artist has posted the series of photos of his artwork onto his website, with each one being a pointed criticism of those opposed to accepting Syrian refugees into their country as the crisis continues to escalate.
This work is the latest high-profile piece from Banksy following Dismaland, a theme park the artist set up in the UK seaside resort of Weston-super-Mare that featured intentionally run-down attractions.
