Menswear shared center stage at this year’s 2016 Met Gala, whose theme, “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology,” explored the relationship between advancements in tech and the human hand in fashion and design. In an ocean of industry insiders and celebrities, classic tailoring mingled with faux-robotic looks composed of everything from polished metal to feathers. While Beyonce stunned in a peachy latex gown by Givenchy and model Karolina Kurkova wore a “cognitive dress” with 150 hand-placed LED lights, the men’s team pushed the edge of reason, as with Zayn Malik’s armored sleeves by Versace and Kanye West’s glittering coat, ripped jeans, and blue contact lenses.
To many, however, the men were the stars of the night, with fewer disasters than usual. Standouts were actor Idris Elba, one of the evening’s co-hosts, who wore a white tie and black tails from Tom Ford; Jared Leto pulled out all the stops in a brilliant white neo-Victorian era three-piece Gucci suit, with a cane to complete his look; and Colin Farrell looked perfectly dapper in Dolce & Gabbana. Tailed tuxedos and traditional wear were everywhere with just a sprinkling of off-beat touches, like Michael B. Jordan’s no-socks looks or Will.i.am’s oversized mask and Gucci jacket with white leaf print.

Winners of the ‘Look At Me’ award went to Hamish Bowles in a black, pink and blue tux, Tyga in his lush short cut silver sequined jacket, Jeremy Scott who seems to have lost his Mariachi Band, and the aforementioned Kanye, who said “Vibes” are what inspired his silvery Balmain jewel-embellished denim jacket.
