Nearly 40 years after it hit theaters, the cult classic film The Warriors is coming to TV.
Deadline broke the story that Hulu has ordered an original series based on The Warriors, which itself was based on the 1965 novel of the same name by Sol Yurick. More intriguingly, the driving forces behind this series adaptation are the Russo brothers, Anthony and Joe. The Russos directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War before they were named as the directors of Marvel’s two-part Avengers: Infinity War.
Despite that insane shooting schedule, the Russos are reportedly lined up to direct the new adaptation of The Warriors. Frank Baldwin has been signed to write the series for the Russos. The Warriors movie took place in 1979, as a gathering of the city’s over-the-top gangs led to an assassination that was pinned on the Warriors themselves. Over the course of one night, the Warriors had to clear their name from the other gangs and attempt to make it back to their own turf alive.

That made for an entertaining film, but the series obviously can’t make that story last for multiple seasons. Instead of a straight adaptation, the show will reportedly “honor the original film while adding its own unique brand of grit, pulp, sex, and violence.”
This isn’t the first attempt to revive The Warriors as a brand. Back in 2005, Rockstar Studios released a video game adaptation of The Warriors in which several of the surviving actors reprised their roles from the movie. There have also been comics based on the movie which acted as prequels and sequels to the film’s story.
