The first ever Resident Evil 7 trailer was debuted during Sony’s E3 2016 press conference, with it representing a drastic departure for the series thanks to a switch to a first-person perspective, along with it now supporting virtual reality in the form of a PSVR mode.
The new game, dubbed Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, suggests that the series will now see players going up against more than just injected humans and animals, with there now apparently being a ghost inserted into the mixer. Whether or not this is simply a red herring remains to be seen, though the gameplay footage shown by Sony certainly indicates that Capcom has taken a few cues from P.T., the playable teaser for the canceled Hideo Kojima Silent Hills game.
Considering that the Resident Evil series has really struggled with its identity over the past few years, it’s refreshing to see the series drop the third-person, action-orientated approach that they’ve been struggling with since Resident Evil 5. We hope that this change of perspective will benefit the game, and we’ll finally have a Resident Evil game that lives up to our expectation since the classic Resident Evil 4.
A 17-minute demo of the game is also available to download for PlayStation Plus subscribers. Watch the debut Resident Evil 7 gameplay trailer below:
