Lionel Messi has retired from international football, hanging up his boots for Argentina after missing a penalty in their Copa America final match against Chile. Now former team-mate Sergio Aguero has hinted that he may not be the last Argentinean player to leave the squad.
Speaking following Messi’s announcement, Aguero told Ole newspaper: “The likelihood is that Messi is not the only one that will leave the national team. There are several players who are evaluating not continuing with the national team.”
He continued: “This is the worst locker room I’ve ever been in, worse than the final in the World Cup in Brazil and the other Copa America. We are all s****y, we are trying to think about other things and continue on forward, but it’s hard. Once again luck has gone against us.
“Unfortunately, the most broken one is Messi for his missed penalty. It is the worst I have ever seen him in the dressing rooms after a game.”
Speaking after Argentina’s 4-2 loss against Chile, Messi said: “In the locker room, I thought that the national team was finished for me, that it’s not for me. It’s what I feel right now.”
He continued: “It’s a great sadness that it happened to me, that I missed penalty kick that was very important. It’s for the good of everybody. It’s not enough to just get to the final and not win.”
There has been no word yet on if Aguero’s comments are correct and more Argentina players are looking to follow suit, though it seems likely that the Manchester City striker will also hang up his boots for the national squad.
