Pat Summitt, no question the greatest female coach in the history of American sports, passed away early Tuesday at the age of 64.
“She died peacefully this morning at Sherrill Hill Senior Living in Knoxville surrounded by those who loved her most,” said Summitt’s son, Tyler, in a statement Tuesday morning.
The former Tennessee Lady Volunteers basketball coach was diagnosed with early onset dementia in August of 2011. Her condition progressed quickly. Her legacy will live-on for decades to come.
Summitt’s stats:
- Won 8 national championships
- Coached 21 all americans
- 1,098 wins – most ever in D-1 basketball, men’s or women’s
- 16 SEC titles
- Won Presidential Medal of Freedom
- She was named the NCAA Coach of the Year seven times and was the Naismith Coach of the Century in 2000.
- National Basketball Hall of Fame inductee
