‘Star Wars: Episode VIII’ is Now ‘Star Wars: The Last Jedi’

The speculation is over! What was once called Star Wars: Episode VIII finally has an official title: Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Now… let the speculation begin!

Any news about the upcoming Star Wars movies is met with rampant excitement from fans of the franchise, who as we all know by now take up a sizable percentage of the world’s population. And since there obviously isn’t enough Star Wars to go around these fans spend a lot of their time speculating about Star Warses to come. We speculate about what the title will be, for example, and once we finally get it we speculate about what it means.

But Star Wars: The Last Jedi seems remarkably straightforward, at a glance. It doesn’t introduce any new ideas or elements into the series, unlike for example Episode VII (which implied a plot point, that “The Force” would be “awakened”) or even Episode I (which gave us the cryptic promise of a “phantom” “menace”).

Just about all we knew about Star Wars: The Last Jedi in the first place was that Luke Skywalker was in it, and that – formally speaking, at any rate – he was already “the last Jedi.” So if that’s all the title means, okay. Nice title. It has an air of authority to it. Well played, LucasFilm.

Then again, The Last Jedi could have a double meaning, just like Return of the Jedi. You’ll recall that the title Return of the Jedi seemed to imply that the Jedi were making a comeback to the galaxy in the form of Luke Skywalker. But by the end of that film it also referred to the fact that Darth Vader had turned his back on the Sith – at the last possible moment but hey, he still did it – and reclaimed his identity as a heroic Jedi.

So if The Last Jedi follows suit, what would that mean? Well, if Luke Skywalker really is “the last Jedi,” and if he – as we all more-or-less expect – spends part of the film training Rey to be another Jedi… does that mean Luke Skywalker is going to die? Is Rey “the last jedi?”

There, we have done our jobs. We have fueled the online speculation matrix. Now go forth and wonder, or sit back in the pleasant knowledge that your speculation will be rendered moot on December 15, 2017, when we’ll find out what actually happens in Star Wars: The Last Jedi, because that’s when it’s being released in theaters.
