Netflix’s original series Stranger Things has taken home the award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series at this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles, and one of the show’s main stars has used the ensemble’s acceptance speech to speak out against “fear”, “self-centredness” and “hypocrisy”.
David Harbour, who plays Hawkins Police Chief Jim Hopper in Stranger Things, took over proceedings and swiftly got the audience to its feet, saying:
“In light of all that’s going on the world today, it’s difficult to celebrate the already celebrated Stranger Things.”
Harbour goes on to say the ensemble’s award is, “A call to arms from our fellow craftsmen and women to go deeper, and through our art to battle against fear, self-centredness and the exclusivity of our predominantly narcissistic society.
“We will repel bullies, we will shelter freaks and outcasts – those who have no home. We will get past the lies, we will hunt monsters,” he says.
“And when we are lost amidst the hypocrisy and the casual violence of certain individuals and institutions, we will, as per Chief Jim Hopper, punch some people in the face when they seek to destroy the weak, the disenfranchised and the marginalised.”
