The NES Mini may have been discontinued worldwide, but new reports have suggested that Nintendo is hard at work on its follow-up, with the SNES Mini set to offer a collection of classic SNES games in a similarly small console.
Sources at Eurogamer have suggested that Nintendo is already working on a SNES Mini, with the company discontinuing production on the NES Mini as a result of this new venture. According to these sources, the SNES Mini is “currently scheduled to launch in time for Christmas this year”, which suggests that it will likely follow the direction of the NES Mini and release in mid-November.

The NES Mini was launched in the UK on November 11, 2016, and immediately faced stock issues. With many retailers failing to receive new units of the console from Nintendo, online scalpers inevitably hiked up the prices of the system on sites such as eBay and Amazon, with its £49.99 launch price tag being bumped up to as much as £350.
Unfortunately, the NES Mini wasn’t the first time that Nintendo failed to match supply to demand. The company has also experienced multiple problems with its Amiibo figurines, with scalpers also profiting off the stock shortages of some of the most popular figures. Though Nintendo has yet to confirm the existence of the SNES Mini, it is hoped that the company won’t repeat its mistakes and will manufacture enough units to send out to retailers this time round.
The SNES Mini has the potential to be a much more appealing purchase than its predecessor, with the Super Nintendo Entertainment System boasting a greater amount of high-quality games such as The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, Super Metroid and Super Mario World. The console is regarded as one of the best ever, with it solidifying Nintendo’s position atop the game development heap back in the ’90s.
