‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ Finally Has a Release Date!

This just in: Star Wars: Episode IX, the final film in the new Star Wars trilogy (which will presumably lead to another Star Wars trilogy and another Star Wars trilogy and so on), will premiere in theaters on May 24, 2019.

Adjust your schedules accordingly.

The news comes via Variety without any details or fanfare. It took forever for LucasFilm and Disney to announce the title of Star Wars: Episode VIII and they only just released the teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Last Jedi, which hits theaters later this year, a little over a week ago. At this rate it’s going to be a very long time until we find out more about the film, other than Colin Trevorrow (Jurassic World) is directing, and the principle cast is expected to return.

Perhaps the most noteworthy part of this information is that Star Wars: Episode IX is coming out in the summer. Previous films in Disney’s iteration of the Star Wars series have come out in December, but after The Last Jedi arrives later this year that trend appears to be dissipating. The Han Solo movie, still officially untitled, comes to theaters on May 25, 2018, setting Star Wars fans up for a one-year wait until Episode IX.

There aren’t many films concretely scheduled for the summer of 2019 yet, but Marvel has another Avengers movie set for early May and Warner Bros. has set an untitled film from their DC Extended Universe for mid-June. It’s entirely possible that other major films will stay clear of the last weekend in May, because Star Wars: Episode IX is probably going to be a monster, just like most of the other Star Wars movies.
