Confirmed: M. Night Shyamalan is Making the ‘Unbreakable’ Sequel

“It’s taken 17 years, M. Night Shyamalan wrote on Twitter this morning. “But I can finally answer the #1 question I get, ‘Are you making a f#&@ing sequel to Unbreakable or what?'”

M. Night Shyamalan went on to reveal his big news in a series of tweets: his next film is a follow-up to both Unbreakable and Split, it will star Bruce Willis, James McAvoy, Anya Taylor-Joy and Samuel L. Jackson… and it will be called Glass.

We’d normally post big SPOILER warnings all over a post like this, which reveals the twist endings to both Unbreakable and Split, but M. Night Shyamalan is apparently 100% fine with it, since he’s spilling the beans on Twitter anyway.

Unbreakable was Shyamalan’s blockbuster follow-up to his Oscar-nominated supernatural drama The Sixth Sense, a film that imagined our shared cultural idea of superheroism is based on some kernel of truth. Bruce Willis played David Dunn, a security guard who discovers his unrealized potential after half a lifetime of disappointment, and Samuel L. Jackson as “Mr. Glass,” a fragile comic book expert and David Dunn’s mentor who we eventually learn was responsible for a series of horrifying atrocities, making him effectively the supervillain counterpoint to the film’s unbreakable hero.

In the seventeen years since Unbreakable, M. Night Shyamalan has been frequently asked in interviews whether a sequel was in the cards. Fans got their answer quite unexpectedly earlier this year, when M. Night Shyamalan’s multiple-personality thriller Split concluded with a big reveal: the film took place in the same world as Unbreakable.

I spoke to M. Night Shyamalan before the release of Split to talk about the twist ending, and although he didn’t confirm that the UnbreakableSplit sequel would be his very next film, he did confirm that his intention was for there to be “one last movie.”

How will Mr. Glass return? Will he find a new way to manipulate both David Dunn and The Horde? Or will he show up in his own super suit? We’ll find out soon enough. Glass is on the way from Blumhouse and Universal Pictures.
