The Trailer for ‘The Dark Tower’ is Here (For Better or Worse)

Never say never.

It’s hard to believe now but there was a time when films we now take for granted were considered total pipe dreams. Go back a couple decades and tell the world that there really will one day be a Star Wars: Episode VII and they probably won’t  believe you. Tell them there will be a massive interconnected series of Marvel superhero movies and they will probably have an aneurism. And tell them that Stephen King’s Dark Tower books will finally hit the big screen and they’d probably punch you right in the face, because everybody knows THAT is never going to happen.

And yet, here we are. Stephen King’s ambitious, sprawling, supposedly un-adaptable series of fantasy novels are finally coming to theaters, courtesy of Nikolaj Arcel (A Royal Affair), starring Idris Elba (Luther) as The Gunsliner and Matthew McConaughey (Dallas Buyers Club) as The Man in Black. It’s coming to theaters on August 4, 2017 and now we finally – finally – have the trailer to prove it.

The funny thing is, although this trailer looks classy and slick, it also kinda looks like a lot of other movies. Big towering spires of power have been the MacGuffin in tons of different sci-fi/fantasy movies now. Heroes with magical gun skills are commonplace now. Tough guys with kid sidekicks is a trope that practically has whiskers on it. It looks like the makers of this The Dark Tower trailer are desperately trying to make this movie seem accessible to everybody, whether or not they’ve read the books, and in the process it’s possible that they may have milked the personality out of it.

But hey, it’s just a trailer. Hopefully The Dark Tower turns out even better than this looks, and we’ll all be able to say it was well worth the wait. Hopefully. Just don’t hold your breath, okay?
