Netflix Orders ‘The Witcher’ To Series

It looks like the story of Geralt of Rivia is far from over. While CD Projekt Red is finished with the original protagonist of The Witcher, Netflix has grander ambitions. The streaming service has revealed that it is developing an original series based on Andrzej Sapkowski’s Witcher novels which inspired the game. This means that the series will probably stick closer to the original books rather than the video game adaptations.

Sapkowski’s Witcher Saga takes place in a world where monster hunters known as witchers are trained at an early age to track and destroy the numerous creatures that are spread across the land. Geralt is one of the most talented witchers, with superhuman strength and enhanced mental abilities. Because he lacks pigmentation in his body and hair, Geralt is known as “the white wolf.”

The Expanse producers Sean Daniel and Jason Brown will be executive producing The Witcher for Netflix, with Sapkowski acting as a creative consultant. In a statement, Daniel and Brown said “The Witcher stories follow an unconventional family that comes together to fight for truth in a dangerous world. The characters are original, funny, and constantly surprising, and we can’t wait to bring them to life at Netflix, the perfect home for innovative storytelling.”

“I’m thrilled that Netflix will be doing an adaptation of my stories, staying true to the source material and the themes that I have spent over thirty years writing,” added Sapkowski. “I’m excited about our efforts together, as well as the team assembled to shepherd these characters to life.”

There’s currently no word on when The Witcher will premiere, but it will likely happen in either 2018 or 2019.
