E3 2017 is an annual showcase of more-or-less every game that players can expect to get their hands on over the next few years, with most publishers, developers and hardware manufacturers descending on the Los Angeles Convention Center in order to build anticipation for their upcoming releases.
E3 2017 wasn’t exactly the most exciting E3 we’ve covered, with it feeling like many of the games that we were most looking forward to seeing were absent from the expo. Though there were a number of exciting announcements (we listed our top 10 favorites right here), it didn’t feel like those involved were firing on all cylinders, as has typically been the case this console generation.

While the build-up to E3 is always filled with increasingly ludicrous speculation regarding which games will be announced (Metroid Prime 4? Pssh, like that’d ever happen…) there were many games this year that we were convinced would show up, only to be disappointed when they failed to make an appearance. With that being said, here are the top 10 E3 2017 games that were missing from the expo:

10. Borderlands 3
Gearbox are reportedly hard at work on Borderlands 3, and while there hasn't been much news regarding its development, it seems like a no-brainer that the popular franchise will continue on. Considering that Borderlands 2 was released way back in 2012, fans have been waiting for its follow-up for a little while now (at least when compared with the turnaround of other major game franchises), but Borderlands 3 was nowhere to be seen at this year's E3.

9. Wild
Ubisoft produced one of the biggest surprises of E3 2017 with the announcement of Beyond Good & Evil 2, and while they had one of the best press conferences of the expo, we were still disappointed that we didn't get to see more of Wild. Michel Ancel's other project, Wild was debuted last year and its intriguing premise immediately won a lot of people over. While Ubisoft already had a lot to show off at this year's E3, we'd have liked to have seen more from this original IP.

8. Death Stranding
It seemed almost certain that Death Stranding would appear at E3 2017, with it being one of Sony's biggest upcoming exclusives and us receiving very little information about it since its reveal last year. Unfortunately both the game and creator Hideo Kojima were not present at the expo, with it still being kept tightly under wraps.

7. Final Fantasy VII Remake
E3 2015 saw Sony make a couple of huge announcements that have thus far failed to produce any fruit, with Final Fantasy VII Remake chief among them. We know that development has now moved in-house to Square Enix, with the Japan studio saying that it moving away from previous developers CyberConnect 2 is a "sensitive subject." We're not quite sure what this means, but it seems that Square are facing difficulties when it comes to bringing this long-awaited project to life, likely explaining why it was missing from this year's E3.

6. Dreams
Media Molecule's next IP following LittleBigPlanet, Dreams looks set to be one of Sony's most unique exclusives, with it continuing to be shrouded in mystery as a result of being absent from E3 2017. We'd have loved to have seen more of it at the expo, but Media Molecule are a small team and they assured followers on Twitter that they're still plugging away at the game behind the scenes.

5. Red Dead Redemption 2
Rockstar have a habit of skipping E3, but considering their exclusivity deal with Sony for Red Dead Redemption 2's online content, we'd convinced ourselves that they might show up this year during Sony's press conference in order to reveal more of the game. Its release has already been pushed back to 2018, so it would have been nice to have seen some footage of it in action to tide us over, but it wasn't to be.

4. Bloodborne 2
From Software have an unparalleled work rate, routinely delivering some of the very best modern games in swift succession. Though the dust has barely settled on Dark Souls 3, many thought that they would be present at E3 2017 to show off their next game, the rumored Bloodborne 2. Unfortunately this was not to be, with them taking a gap year and a well-deserved break from the expo.

3. Shenmue 3
Shenmue 3 is another game debuted at E3 2015 that has been M.I.A. ever since, with Sony having announced its triumphant Kickstarter campaign that rolled in a ton of cash for the project, before it disappeared into the shadows. We have no idea when it'll release, with it experiencing frequent delays and practically nothing in the way of gameplay footage, but its absence from E3 2017 is another unfortunate sign that all may not be well in its development.

2. Cyberpunk 2077
CD Projekt RED first announced Cyberpunk 2077 back in 2014, and since then they have released one of the most critically-acclaimed RPGs ever in the form of The Witcher 3, along with two well-received expansions for the game. The studio faced an unexpected hurdle this year after a hacker stole design documents for Cyberpunk 2077, so hopefully this hasn't affected the development of the game too much and we'll hear more about it soon.

1. The Last of Us 2
We were almost certain that The Last of Us 2 would close Sony's E3 2017 press conference, but instead Naughty Dog opted to show off the Uncharted 4 spin-off Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. The sequel to their post-apocalyptic magnum opus isn't expected to release until 2019, but we were sure we'd see at least a sliver of new footage at this year's E3. But alas, it was not to be.
