There are few filmmakers currently working in the world today who excite us as much as Ava DuVernay. Her breakout film, Selma, is one of the most overwhelming and immersive motion pictures ever told about the Civil Rights movement. Her follow-up documentary The 13th has the power to change the way people look at American history. And for her next feat, she’s directing A Wrinkle in Time, based on the acclaimed and influential science fiction novel by Madeleine L’Engle, which makes her the first woman of color to direct a movie with a budget of more than $100 million.
It’s an impressive career trajectory and, with the release of the first trailer for A Wrinkle in Time, we think there’s an excellent chance that Ava DuVernay is only going to get better from here. The colorful, imaginative and unusual imagery on display in this preview makes it look like no other film that is currently on the horizon, and makes it seem as though DuVernay could be transforming the influential and groundbreaking YA fantasy novel into a film with the potential – at least – to have that same impact.
A Wrinkle in Time stars Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon, Mindy Kaling, Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Michael Peňa, Levi Miller, Deric McCabe, André Holland, Rowan Blanchard, Zach Galifianakis, Chris Pine and newcomer Storm Reid, and arrives in theaters on March 9, 2018!
