The Time is Nigh for the Jay and Silent Bob Reboot!

Sixteen years ago, Jay and Silent Bob traveled across the country to stop production on a movie based – loosely – on their real lives, and teamed up with an orangutan and foiled a team of sexy thieves in the process. Now they’ve got to do it all over again, and put a stop to some kind of “Jay and Silent Bob reboot.”

Kevin Smith announced that production begins this fall on Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, which will re team the pair of slacker, stoner characters who first debuted in Smith’s breakout comedy Clerks, back in 1994. The film led to a series of comedies, most of them connected by Jay and Silent Bob, played by Jason Mewes and Smith himself, who took either lead or supporting roles in the follow-ups MallratsDogmaChasing AmyJay and Silent Bob Strike Back and Clerks 2. (They also appeared in Wes Craven’s Scream 3, making it a VERY weird interconnected universe.)

Kevin Smith had this to say about the plot of the upcoming comedy, in an Instagram post earlier this year: “I had the time of my life laughing while writing “Jay and Silent Bob Reboot” – a fun flick in which the Jersey boys have to go back to Hollywood to stop a brand new reboot of the old “Bluntman & Chronic Movie” they hated so much. It’s a tongue-in-cheek, silly-ass satire that pokes fun at the movie business’s recent re-do obsession, featuring an all-star cast of cameos and familiar faces!”

In that same post, Kevin Smith explained what happened to his plans for Clerks 3 (one of the lead actors didn’t want to do it) as well as the proposed Mallrats sequel (which turned into a TV series and then didn’t get picked up).

No word yet on which other members of the View Askewniverse will return for Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back, or which geeky celebrities will make cameos this time around, but previous stars and co-stars of Smith’s interconnected comedic universe include Ben Affleck, Jason Lee, Chris Rock, Salma Hayek, Mark Hamill, Michael Rooker, Alanis Morrisette, Eliza Dushku, Shannon Elizabeth, Ali Larter, Seann William Scott and Jon Stewart.
