Deleted ‘Wonder Woman’ Scene Sets the Stage for ‘Justice League’

One of the many qualities that made Wonder Woman just a refreshing, exciting superhero movie was that it really did stand alone, telling a complete story that wasn’t unnecessarily packed with references and teases for future installments in the DC Extended Universe.

But as it turns out, that wasn’t always the case: a newly-released, deleted scene from the upcoming Wonder Woman Blu-ray features a big ol’ tease for the upcoming Justice League movie, which finds Wonder Woman and Batman uniting a team of heroes to stave off an invasion of conquering aliens. The plot, as near as we can tell, will involve the mysterious and powerful alien technology known as a “Mother Box”, and apparently they’ve been on Earth for quite a while.

In this deleted scene, which takes place after the events of Wonder Woman and after World War I, Etta Candy (Lucy Davis) assembles Wonder Woman’s remaining teammates Charlie (Ewan Bremner), Sameer (Saïd Taghmaoui) and Chief Napi (Eugene Brave Rock) for a mission of great importance. And although she doesn’t explicitly say it has anything to do with Darkseid or Mother Boxes or aliens, there aren’t a lot of other artifacts that would be worth teasing at this point in the DCEU, are there?

As interesting as it is, it’s easy to see why this scene didn’t make the final cut. It teases future events but has nothing meaningful to add to them, because knowing that Wonder Woman’s team was responsible for finding this artifact doesn’t actually change our understanding of what it will be and what it will do. It’s also a scene that exists entirely in dialogue, and doesn’t show the audience anything dramatic or fascinating. It feels like an afterthought that the filmmakers eventually realized did very little to set up Justice League, and didn’t even affect the events of Wonder Woman very much, although the idea of Etta Candy taking on a continued leadership position is very encouraging and fun to think about.

Check out the scene (via Yahoo) and check out Wonder Woman on Digital HD now, and on Blu-ray on September 19, 2017.
