We all know that the juggernaut that is Star Wars: The Last Jedi is incoming at the end of the year. Nobody is sleeping on the sequel to the 2014 sleeper hit Kingsman: The Secret Service. Blade Runner 2049 is one of the most expected sequels ever. It has a vast following behind it already. But there are movies 2017 has been keeping under the radar that very well might be awesome films to remember.

The following movies might be cult-favorites or legitimate award winners by years end and we are expecting them with great hopes.

Movies 2017 Has Yet To Reveal

Mute

Duncan Jones is one of the most promising young directors after making the acclaimed movies like Moon (2009), Source Code (2011) and the underappreciated Warcraft (2016), and he is now coming with his passion project Mute that he co-wrote. Alexander Skarsgård, Justin Theroux, Paul Rudd, and Sam Rockwell star in this Sci-Fi thriller about a mute bartender that goes against the city’s criminals in order to find out what happened to his partner. It seems like the movie will have a unique visual style and a lot of humor, based on the actors involved.

Wind River

After dishing out two brilliant scripts in Sicario and Hell or High Water, screenwriter Taylor Sheridan takes on the directorial role as well for his third movie script – Wind River. Taylor was so far very socially conscious and deep in writing for his movies, and it would be interesting to see what will he do with the crime drama mystery about a veteran tracker who helps to investigate the murder of a young Native American woman. Jeremy Renner and Elizabeth Olsen star in this very promising movie that hits some theaters mid-August.

Okja

A complete switch of tones and genres for the proven Korean director and writer Joon-ho Bong as he goes from the dark Snowpiercer (2013) and Mother (2009) to a fantasy adventure about a little girl protecting her best friend – a magical animal named Okja. Tilda Swinton, Jake Gyllenhaal, and the underrated Paul Dano are all a part of a very large cast. The movie is just about to drop on Netflix, and we expect it to be as bold as the director and the streaming service/production company are. Two of these movies 2017 has hidden are going to be released on Netflix, which shows how much the company is willing to take a risk.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Once again we’re putting our bets on a director/screenwriter that made us happy with his previous work – Martin McDonagh. The Englishman is a fan of the dark humor, so we expect more of the weird, unique jokes of In Bruges (2008) and Seven Psychopats (2012) in peculiarly named Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Frances McDormand, Woody Harrelson, and Sam Rockwell will have the privilege to spout out some probably insane lines that McDonagh has cooked up. A movie that may go on and be a cult favorite and an award winner too.

The Man from Earth: Holocene

A probable cult-favorite as well as it is a sequel to a small movie that truly intrigued people – The Man from Earth (2007). The same director and the same writer sign to the unexpected, but welcomed sequel, as the premise of the movie is really captivating and unique. We might get a more active movie seeing how the last one was set within confines of a room and the synopsis of the new movie announces that there will be some unexpected changes to the main character. One of the most well-hidden movies 2017 has to offer.

Which of these movies 2017 has to offer has you most excited? Or are you still more excited for blockbusters like It, Star Wars and Blade Runner 2049?
