No point in wasting any time getting to the next female-led hit, especially after all the success of Black Panther in the superhero universe. Between that and A Wrinkle in Time, it seems like time’s up for a new heist reboot, and Ocean’s 8 is set to steal the show on June 8.
While the original Ocean’s 11 dates back to 1960, the new female-driven cast emulates the 2001 start to the George Clooney/Brad Pitt trilogy, in which Danny Ocean (Clooney) starts a casino heist immediately upon his release from prison, putting together a team of 11 conmen for a job he’s been planning inside. While the film was a classic in itself, its sequels failed disastrously to deliver the same punch. The new film, starring Sandra Bullock in the lead as Danny’s sister, Debbie, will follow a similar suit with her release from prison, just before finding Cate Blanchett and rolling the dice, only this time the heist will go down in New York at the Met Gala.
We’ve got an early look at Ocean’s excellent eight, including some of the most badass women in Hollywood (Helena Bonham Carter, Rihanna) and some of the funniest, too (Awkwafina, Mindy Kaling), along with James Corden who will likely be like the Chris Hemsworth of the Ghostbusters reboot. Meet the cast, see how they relate back to their predecessors and take a wild guess how jokes there’ll be about not needing balls to pull off a good heist.
With a laundry lit of major female cameos and a few surprise guest returns, it looks to be a steal.
This original Ocean’s 11 throwback was our first reaction, until we saw the trailer.

Debbie Is The New Danny
Photos: Warner Bros.
Sandra Bullock leads the pack as Danny Ocean's (Clooney) estranged sister. It seems she's wired the same way.

Look Familiar?
Does this blonde-brunette pair hatching a clever scheme, draped in comedically questioning the others motives look like something you've seen before.

Think Hard...Circa 2001 Hard
That's because Clooney and Pitt pulled this stunt for three consecutive movies. Now let's see who else is on board the Ocean train.
-
Blanchett Is the New Brad
Cate Blanchett plays the role of Lou. She even has Pitt's style in the scenes we've come across: swank, relaxed crossing of the legs and not a care in the world. Hopefully she's smart enough not to get into the hotel business.
-
Sarah Paulson (Tammy)

Paulson will play Tammy, a former con-woman who's moved on to the simple (boring) life. It's unclear as to her role, except that she seems to be way more daring than she comes across. Like the girl next door who sneaks out to ride her motorcycle when everyone has gone to sleep.
-
Rihanna (Nine Ball)
It seems Rihanna will play Nine Ball, the computer genius of the group, based on images of her mouse ball being a nine ball. She will likely also play the role of Rihanna: part badass, part more badass.
-
Anne Hathaway (Daphne)

Hathaway is rumored to play Daphne, the celebrity inside woman who's key to the group's heist, as she'll be wearing the jewels to be stolen at the gala. The villain of the film is Damian Lewis so look for her connection to him early on, or perhaps he'll be Bullock's ex, kind of how Julia Roberts was Clooney's in the first movie.
-
Awkwafina (Constance)
Comedian/rapper Awkwafina will play the pick-pocket of the group, definitely adding some spice, and who may use her small frame the way the Oceans boys used Qin Shaobo (Yen) in their heists.
-
Helena Bonham Carter (Rose)

If we had to guess, Helena (Rose) will be the old school gal who likes to do things the hard, yet hilarious, way. Like using a switchblade when kind words will suffice. It appears she's a fashion icon on the decline who needs the heist to relieve her woes.
-
Mindy Kaling (Amita)
Kaling is set to play Amita, who looks to be the jewel knockoff queen, but she'll surely provide her usual brand of comedy.
