Bill Murray is a bit of an enigma, both as an actor and a cultural icon. While the urban legends about Murray are (mostly) true, he has always made really interesting acting choices. Last year, we learned that Murray would have a role in Marvel’s upcoming film Ant-Man: Quantumania. In turn, this caused us to second-guess whether Wes Anderson might be directing this one.
While details about the film remain secret, Murray has revealed more info about his role in it. On a recent episode of Eli Manning’s show, Murray let it slip that he’s playing a bad guy in the upcoming threequel. When asked what his superpower is, he responded “my power is, I’m a bad guy.” The actor also adds that he was excited to work with Peyton Reed because of Bring It On. Phew, close call on that one.
All kidding aside, the fact that Murray is officially part of the MCU remains an exciting prospect. Aside from playing against the “funny sidekick type,” a wild hypothetical would be to see Bill Murray essentially playing himself in the Marvel multiverse. The main antagonist in Ant-Man: Quantumania has been confirmed to be Kang the Conquerer, so it will be interesting to see who Murray will ultimately play. If anything, this news raises more questions than answers.
The film will also serve as a mini-reunion between Murray and Paul Rudd after last year’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Nevertheless, the question of how significant the roe will still remain. But according to Murray, the comedian won’t be coming back for future installments. “Let’s put it this way: the director [Peyton Reed] is a good guy, and now I’ve at least tried out what it’s like to shoot a Marvel movie,” he explained back in October. “But I don’t think I need that experience a second time.” Ouch.
