Worst Movie Reviews Ever: ‘Top Gun’ Is Just ‘Call Me by Your Name’ With Jets

In the latest edition of Worst Reviews Ever, we’re pulling together the funniest audience movie reviews on the internet. From funny to ironic, truthful to the downright silly, we’re diving into the deep, dark rabbit hole of online movie fandom. Today we turn our attention to the original Top Gun movie.

When the action flick was released in 1986, it was, simply put, a cultural phenomenon. Although the film was met with mixed reviews by critics, the film was a massive hit with audiences. Grossing $357 million on a $15 million budget, the soundtrack for the film also went 9x platinum and won the Academy Award for Best Song (“Take My Breath Away” by Berlin).

The film had such a big cultural impact that, according to modern folklore, Navy recruitments jumped 500 percent the following year. Due to its cultural impact, the film was selected for the US National Film Registry for being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

Directed by the late great Tony Scott, the story follows Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and his life partner co-pilot Nick “Goose” Bradshaw as they navigate an elite Navy training school for which the movie gets its namesake. The film is notable for birthing Tom Cruise: The Movie Star. When it comes to Tom Cruise’s film career, there is BTG (Before Top Gun) and ATG (After Top Gun). There was absolutely no transition phase as Cruise was thrown into a life of movie stardom.

There’s no denying that this movie is packed with bromance — just a couple of straight guys being great friends, having the time of their lives, and affirming their love for one another.

As it turns out, one of the best places for Joe Schmoe to give his honest thoughts on a film is the platform is Letterboxd.com. Naturally, these amateur reviewers have come to a consensus: Top Gun is one of the most homoerotic straight dude movies ever made; a.k.a. Call me By Your Name with jets. Here’s what they have to say.
