FX’s Restaurant Drama ‘The Bear’ Drops Today (Here’s Why It’s a Must-See Series)

For anyone who’s ever survived the insanity that is working in food service, or for those intrigued by what goes on behind closed doors at your favorite eatery, FX has a series for you. It’s called The Bear and it’s already racking up glowing reviews, praise, and buzz ahead of its premiere this week.

The show, which was created by Christopher Storer (Ramy), centers around Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto (Jeremy Allen White of Shameless fame), a fine-dining chef who takes over his family’s scrappy sandwich shop after his brother (a star who shall not be named because it’s a surprise) dies by suicide.

The Original Beef of Chicagoland in Chicago’s River North neighborhood is the setting of this mouthwatering drama, and it’s where Carmy butts heads with kitchen staff, particularly his sister (Abby Elliott) and his late brother’s best friend Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach). Things only get worse when Carmy recruits a Culinary Institute of America-trained sous chef (Ayo Edebiri) to elevate the greasy spoon’s aesthetic.

The Bear expertly captures the hectic, fast-paced, foul-mouthed environment that is a busy, cramped kitchen in the midst of a rush. You’ll come to care about these characters, who grapple with grief and addiction. And you’ll enjoy the ride, even though it ties up a little too tidily at the end. If you’re an Anthony Bourdain/Kitchen Confidential stan, this series won’t disappoint.

The eight-episode first season of The Bear drops on FX and Hulu on Thursday, June 23. Until then, whet your palate with this trailer.
