[Update: Miss Love has apparently responded to the article in the comments section.]
In her apparently never-ending quest to become the Frances Farmer of modern music, Courtney Love took to the stage in front of tens of thousands of festivalgoers at the SWU music festival in Brazil on Sunday and berated a fan, flashed her breasts, claimed responsibility for much of the Smashing Pumpkins’ finest work and accused Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl of stealing from her daughter, among other delights.
Love’s on-again, off-again band Hole headlined the festival’s New Stage for the event’s second day, and the singer/songwriter immediately took her reputation as a conspiracy-obsessed paranoid narcissist to a new level of self-humiliation. The delusionally spastic Love asked the fans at her feet for “a chapstick for my herpes sore,” before declaring without provocation that Billy Corgan wrote nearly all the songs on The Smashing Pumpkins’ best albums Siamese Dream and Mellon Collie & the Infinite Sadness about her – adding that the “The killer in me is the killer in you” lyric to the Pumpkins’ heartbreaker classic “Disarm” came from a letter she wrote.
That would be silly enough on its own, and relatively harmless for a woman known for her breakdowns, drug binges and erratic behavior. But she went further down the rabbit hole, declaring herself immune to the social rules of homophobia (“I’m allowed to use the word ‘fag’ because I’m a gay icon”), and, after seeing a fan holding a picture of her deceased husband Kurt Cobain, publicly slandering one of the world’s most beloved rock stars.
While berating the concertgoer for the image of Kurt, Courtney somehow changed the subject to Dave Grohl – a longtime target of her tangents – stating: “You weren’t fucking married to him, I was. You didn’t get kicked out of a band by him, like Dave, he did. Go see the fucking Foo Fighters and do that shit.” If that makes sense to you, please do send a post card from whatever planet you’re visiting.
After the meltdown, Love stormed off the stage. Hole’s guitarist returned to the mic after a few moments, instructing the crowd to yell “Foo Fighters are gay” in order for his boss to reemerge from the shadows. When Courtney finally returned, she menacingly offered – in a thinly veiled dig at Grohl: “I don’t care what you listen to at home, but if a guy takes off money off my kid’s table, fuck him.”
Unsatisfied with just the singular cut down, Love went on to claim that Dave Grohl makes “millions” and “steals” from Love and Cobain’s daughter Frances Bean Cobain. After performing a horrific rendition of u2’s The Fly, Courtney attacked Grohl once more: “If you don’t write a song, you don’t get publishing, you don’t steal money from the child, the mom, the sister.” Keep in mind, this is the same woman who publicly wished for the man to be raped.
Having squandered the majority of the massive fortune her late husband amassed with Nirvana, Love undoubtedly has few fingers left to point in her desperate delusion. While the stories of Courtney’s public meltdowns, insane conspiracy theories and various recurring drug addictions continue to make headlines, her most recent album flopped badly, and her financial troubles continue.
The story of Courtney Love is not likely to end well.
