Vance Joy Is Folk’s Newest Face

‘Riptide’, the hugely popular single from newcomer Australian singer-songwriter Vance Joy has reached ARIA Gold Status as his latest national tour of the same name sells out fast.

The catchy acoustic track appeared on Vance Joy’s debut EP, Loves You When You Are Dancing, and propelled Melbourne’s favourite new son to a five-album deal with massive American record label Atlantic Records.

The single and the artist have emerged from unique beginnings. Joy dropped a promising VFL opportunity with the Coburg Tigers, the reserve team of the AFL’s Richmond Tigers, to pursue his music ambition while ‘Riptide’ was a Soundcloud upload that soared to the #1 spot on Hype Machine within a few hours of being posted.

Currently at #29 on the ARIA Singles Chart, ‘Riptide’ has banked 35,000 sales and just hit Gold Status.

Joy’s, aka James Keogh, upcoming ‘Riptide Tour’ in August is following suit from a bunch of sold out performances back in April. Extra shows are now opening up in Melbourne and Sydney as tickets for Adelaide, Brisbane and Fremantle sell quickly.

You can’t help but get the feeling Keogh is still warming up to the newfound celebrity and building confidence as an artist on the rise.

Joy told News Limited in May that his stage name derives from the Peter Carey book Bliss.

“It was my idea to not be out there as ‘James Keogh’, it felt better,” he said.

“When you put your name on a pedestal it feels weird, maybe that’s a lack of confidence. It is hard to say ‘Hi, I’m Vance Joy’ still. When I meet people I’ll introduce myself as James. I’ll answer to Vance but I don’t lead with it, unless someone says ‘Hey Vance’. If this lasts for a while I’m sure the name will take a stronger hold.”

He might be a reluctant star, but Vance Joy is set for big things. Taking some time off to record his first full-length album, ‘The Riptide Tour’ will be your last chance to see him live for quite some time.
