Saints Row IV to End Story Arch, Future Games Going in a “Different Direction”

Saints Row‘s current story arch has quickly accelerated from absurdity to insanity. It’s been a fun run but Volition, Inc. is ready to move on.

Speaking with GameReactor, design director Scott Philips shared the company’s decision to make Saints Row IV the last of its kind. He said:

We’re definitely considering Saints Row IV sort of the end of that saga of this character and the Saints as they are, so if there’s any more future Saints Rows—which you know we always hope there will be, we hope there’s fans for future games like that—they will probably continue in a different direction.

Although Philips’ quote makes it appear that the future of Saints Row is in jeopardy, it’s unlikely that it will end this soon since the series has been extremely profitable. The last release, Saints Row: The Third accrued over 2.5 million units sold. For a studio that previously struggled to break the million barrier such success isn’t something you turn a shoulder on without thinking twice.

With the series opening itself up to new possibilities, the options are endless. It could go in the direction of Grand Theft Auto with more believable scenarios, or it could stick to being wacky but present it in new, novel ways. For now, the world awaits Saints Row IV which will conclude the epic saga with an alien invasion. There’s no better way to go.
