Director’s Cut: Nirvana’s Disturbing ‘Heart Shaped Box’ Video

Nirvana‘s rarities-packed In Utero reissue is set to arrive on Sept. 24, and included in the treasure-trove collection is the director’s cut of the 1993 video for the band’s “Heart Shaped Box” single. Watch it below, with the majority of changes taking place in the third verse, involving the obese woman and young lady in the klan robe.

20th anniversary festivities surrounding the band’s In Utero reissue are underway, anticipating the 3CD/DVD version of the reissue which, in addition to the director’s cut of “Heart Shaped Box,” includes many favorite B-sides and compilation tracks, as well as a December 1993 Seattle live show, demos, and the Steve Albini-mixed versions of “Heart Shaped Box” and “All Apologies.” Recently unearthed instrumentals “Forgotten Tune” and “Jam,” both from early album sessions that set the template for In Utero songs like “Tourette’s,” “Pennyroyal Tea” and “Radio Friendly Unit Shifter.” The reissue will also include copies of Kurt Cobain’s handwritten lyrics and new liner notes from comedian/director Bobcat Goldthwait.

Check out the full tracklist and detail on the upcoming In Utero reissue.

Also included is the first solo recording from drummer Dave Grohl, now the man-of-million-projects and Foo Fighters frontman. The track is called “Marigold,” and was originally released as a B-side to the “Heart-Shaped Box” single. Speaking of Grohl, he and his fellow Foos are looking at a unique recording approach for their upcoming new album, which they’ve finished writing and are expected to release in 2014.
