When Bayonetta 2 was announced as a Wii U exclusive it shocked gamers worldwide. Since then, developer Platinum Games has become a premier third-party developer for Nintendo. This begs the question, why isn’t it second-party at this point?
Platinum Games director Hideki Kamiya was asked by IGN Benelux whether or not he’d like to become a second-party studio for Nintendo, to which he replied.
Yes, I would like to. It would be great to continue working with Nintendo closely.
Kamiya also expressed interest in making a The Wonderful 101 sequel, in addition to bringing the original Bayonetta to the Wii U. Neither project has been confirmed, though.
According to sales figures, The Wonderful 101 hasn’t been a blockbuster in Japan or Europe despite its positive critical reception, beaten out by Dragon’s Crown, Pikmin 3, and 13 others during its launch week. That could greatly impact its future of having a sequel. More importantly, it can affect Nintendo’s outlook on how valuable Platinum Games is for its strategy.
