In eight seasons It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has gone from a cult TV show to the most popular comedy on the FX networks. The group of five misfits have become some of the most popular fictional characters Philadelphia has ever seen and are as recognizable as Ben Franklin and William Penn.
The show has covered everything Philadelphia related, from local hangouts to famous city traditions. Philadelphia sports teams have been no exception – and in 2009 one of the sitcom’s longest ongoing jokes began. In the episode titled “The World Series Defense”, Mac writes a love letter to second baseman Chase Utley, complete with stickers and little kid-like dialogue.
Here’s the original scene:
Well after several years – and several references to the letter on the show – Utley responded, in what was nothing short of sheer brilliance and hilarity. We’ll let the video tell the story:
It’s good to see Utley and the Phillies organization having a little fun during a season lacking in that department. Utley has appeared on the show as himself, so we wouldn’t be surprised if this leads to another guest cameo, with the new season kicking off this month. Or maybe this was a publicity stunt?
