After years of being a leader in action adventure, Naughty Dog may be looking to travel to outer space.
A Twitter post by Naughty Dog Artist David Ballard could hint at the possibility of the successful studio working on a sci-fi game. His post includes:
Naughty Dog touring SpaceX!
SpaceX is a space transport company that has received a lot of support from NASA, and is not only responsible for cargo delivery but is expected to produce the world’s first commercial space transport program. Their site reads:
SpaceX designs, manufactures and launches advanced rockets and spacecraft. The company was founded in 2002 to revolutionize space technology, with the ultimate goal of enabling people to live on other planets.
This begs the question: is Naughty Dog making a sci-fi game?
For one, its second development team, which completed development of The Last of Us in June, is said to be working on a new IP. That same team also created a sci-fi comic called Savage Starlight, which it used as a fictional universe in The Last of Us. They’ve gone as far as register a domain for the universe and create a very realistic movie poster with two characters on display. One of these character could become a playable character if the stars align (see what I did there?).
Above all else, now’s the perfect time for Naughty Dog to try something new. It succeeded tremendously with The Last of Us, and while that was a departure from its action adventure formula, it wasn’t completely outside its comfort zone. Anything with lasers and spaceships would be.
For now this is merely speculation, but we would love to see what Naughty Dog can do for the sci-fi genre, Savage Starlight or not.
