Sony Expects PS4 to Have a Shorter Lifespan

Expecting your PS4 to be your console gaming machine for the next decade? Not so fast.

Sony UK managing director Fergal Gara shared with TechRadar that he expects the PS4 to live a shorter life than the PS3. He said:

I think there’s reasons to believe that the next cycle might be shorter in markets such as the UK.

He explained:

It’s probably a sign of the times and how much has changed in seven years, but I think the willingness and the appetite to pick up new technology fast has probably changed quite a bit.

The PS3 wasn’t succeeded for a full seven years, a number that is considered long by gaming industry standards. Many of the platform’s best games released only a few years into its lifecycle, making the wait for the PS4 feel elongated.

Sony aiming for a more concise lifecycle isn’t necessarily a bad thing, although the PS4’s first year of exclusives aren’t particularly appetizing. It’ll need to really kick its software lineup into gear to make the most of its time on the planet.

Though the lifespan could be shorter, that doesn’t mean Sony will cut support entirely. It has shown over the years that it doesn’t give up on its last-generation offerings which has led to monumental long-term sales for its PS1 and PS2 platforms. The same should apply for its latest hardware.
