PlayStation Vita Experiences Huge Sales Increase Following PS4 Release

The PlayStation Vita might have a troubling two years in its past, but thanks to the PS4 the tough days might be over.

New details released by MCV show a drastic increase in PS Vita sales during the week of the PS4 launch. Preliminary data shows that the increase was 68% over the previous 7-days, and an even more significant jump year-over-year.

Typically, a new hardware launch negatively impacts other hardware, but not in this case. Sony’s ability to deliver Remote Play as part of the PS4’s day one package has given gamers a solid reason to invest in Sony’s latest handheld.

The Vita currently has a total of 5.7 million units shipped during its first 18 months on the market, which isn’t exactly a great number. However, its last few months have looked much more promising with highly-acclaimed exclusive releases (Persona 4 Golden and Tearaway), a new hardware revision, and even a TV compatible variant announced.

But really, the handheld’s slow start has put it in a bad spot. Some developers lost interest early on, and there still hasn’t been a game that properly shows off why the two-analog configuration should be mandatory in the handheld market.

That said, being able to play AAA next-gen titles on a 5 inch OLED screen is truly impressive. If nothing else, Remote Play will increase the quality of life for those who have invested in the device.
