Phil Jones’ Terrible Penalty Hit a Fan in the Face

Manchester United suffered a huge embarrassment last night (January 22nd) as they plummeted out of the Capital One Cup, following a defeat on penalties to Premier League bottom-dwellers Sunderland.

Man Utd, who are 7th in the League table, and Sunderland, who are 19th, had the second leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final decided by spot-kicks after playing to a 3-3 aggregate within the 120 minutes. But while new boss David Moyes has spent the majority of this season shouldering the blame for the club’s failings, most of the attention has been placed on defender Phil Jones and his truly awful penalty, which sealed United’s fate.

United failed to hit four of their five penalties in the shoot-out, but it was Phil Jones’ miss that has made the headlines, after it sailed over the crossbar and hit an unsuspecting fan in the face.

Following the game, Moyes revealed that he thought his squad “didn’t deserve” to make it to the Capital One Cup final after their performance. He said: “With a minute to go (with the aggregate score at 2-2) we thought we had got ourselves through. We got back in it and we had a chance with the penalty kicks but overall we didn’t play well enough tonight.

“A lot of games this season we have played well and not had our rewards. We didn’t really deserve anything tonight with how we played.

“When we had the moments and chances to get a second goal, we made the wrong decisions or didn’t finish it off.

“But Sunderland played well and I have no problem with them going through, they deserved it.”
