Black Screen of Death Hits Xbox One Following Update, Microsoft Posts Fix

The Xbox One’s first major post-release update has quelled some horrors of owning an early Xbox One (like not being able to see the battery life on your controller). However, it’s also brought a new nightmare of its own.

A few users have taken to social media such as Twitter to share that the latest Xbox One update has turned their new console into a doorstop. Although the console turns on and appears to behave normally—it’s able to boot into the operating system—no image can be seen. Consequently, users are dubbing it the Black Screen of Death.

The issue isn’t very serious, though. Microsoft found out about the issue within a couple hours of the update being published, and has found a cure. The XboxSupport Twitter account posted the following message:

We are aware, thank you! If it happens, please power cycle by holding power for 10 seconds.

Microsoft is working on a fix that will prevent users from having to do a hard power cycle.

The issue seems to derive from those with the Instant-On mode enabled, which is required to install the update in the first place. Something about the console’s sleep mode and the update just doesn’t mix right.
