Everybody knows House of Blues as a place to catch an excellent rock show from music’s most prominent names. With pristine sound, fantastic rock n’ roll ambiance and a reputation for hosting some serious kickass bands at numerous venues throughout the U.S., the brand is synonymous with a high-quality concert experience. The unexpected bonus: they’ve brought on a truly great chef to helm a menu that’s evolved into a truly delectable dining experience to go with your night of live music.
At the Crossroads dining experience at House of Blues San Diego, celebrity chef Aaron Sanchez (seen on several shows on the Food Network) has concocted a collection of dishes that blend traditional American cuisine with soul and international influence, along with some irresistible and newly evolved signature dishes including shrimp & grits and short rib meatball sliders. Longtime regulars will find relief in knowing many of their favorite dishes remain on the menu, including the mouth-watering jambalaya, while favorites such as the pulled pork sandwiches or the mouth-wateringly juicy signature burgers have been updated by Sanchez in a beautiful culinary evolution.
Previous House of Blues dining favorites like jambalaya thankfully remain on the menu, while Chef Sanchez has created updated versions of HOB staples like cornbread, pulled pork sandwiches and signature burgers that feature unique twists. I came down for a meal in the name of reviewing the new menu roll-out, and after a tremendously filling, delectably euphoric experience from general manager Matthew Higgins, sous chef Dylan Luttrelle-Boyd and staff, I’ve found myself returning twice in the weeks since then just to taste more of the new menu offerings.
While the BBQ sauce on the St. Louis Ribs was a bit heavy on tomato flavor for my fickle tastes, the meat was literally falling off the bones – which were all that remained after devouring them (an inarguable sign of quality). The Buttermilk Fried Chicken goes so far beyond finger lickin’ good, you’ll wish you had more fingers. And it’s hardly fair to draw comparisons between the Voodoo Shrimp appetizers and shrimp dishes at other restaurants, simply for the fact that there couldn’t possibly be an improvement on the unbelievably flavorful taste of sautéed jumbo shrimp, simmered in an amber beer reduction on top of homemade jalapeño cornbread. It’s not every day you get to experience heaven inside your mouth.
“House of Blues is all about music, love, art and spirituality,” Chef Sanchez has often said. “In many ways, those are the same ingredients for great food and that’s exactly what I’ve tried to capture in the new menu for the Crossroads restaurants.”
