Just a year ago Final Fantasy XIV was holding on for dear life. A rushed release and outdated vision resulted in a game that had almost no staying power. Thankfully, Square Enix went to work on reinventing the game, and the result speaks of their hard labor.
Square Enix has announced that Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn has surpassed two million subscribers. Of those, a record of 500,000 players have been online at any given time.
This figure was announced earlier today, meaning it only accounts for the first day of sales of the new PS4 version. It’s likely that the number will rise over the course of the month. The number also means that the game has actually grown since its launch in August of last year, something that only World of Warcraft and EVE Online have achieved in the MMO space during the last decade.
Of course, this consistent post-launch growth is due in-part to its secondary launch on PS4. At least we’ve learned that thoughtfully porting an MMO to console is a financially viable option.
We’ve been thoroughly impressed by Square Enix’s revival of FFXIV. If you haven’t checked it out already, be sure to read our review of the PS4 version which launched this week.
