Some artists inevitably haunt the observer, firing an extra spark of stimuli that captivates inexplicably, a dark gravity pulling us into the alien atmosphere. The fire of Carré Callaway, aka Queen Kwong, appears, at a glance, as a delicate and captivating flicker, cooing gently before enveloping us in a disarming intensity.
This dichotomy serves Queen Kwong very well, allowing Callaway to sidestep the low-hanging Reznor style comparisons that inevitably follow her after the Nine Inch Nails nucleus personally selected her as an opener on NIN’s With Teeth arena tour – when she was only 17. Raised in the orbit of a Denver goth/punk club owned by her father, Carré displays none of the trappings of an industry newcomer out of her element, but rather a confident streak of true promise in rapid bloom. As evidenced by her 2013 EP Bad Lieutenant (iTunes), we’ve only begun to taste the sweet water from Queen Kwong’s creative well.
Watch as she writhes, naked and serpentine, in a plastic cocoon in the new video for the single “Bad Lieutenant,” premiered exclusively on CraveOnline. While hands caress and claw at her from all sides, the track grinds forward in a hypnotic drive of percussion and keys… and we can’t stop watching.
Stay tuned for music from Queen Kwong in 2014. In the meantime, keep up with Queen Kwong on Facebook and Twitter, and pick up the Bad Lieutenant EP right here. She also has a new track called “The Strange Fruit” featuring the kaleidoscopic excellence of Wes Borland. Additionally, she apparently makes a mean batch of chocolate-chip cookies.
