It’s been guaranteed that a Red Dead Redemption sequel will eventually make its way to us, after Take-Two said that it is a “permanent franchise” for the company.
Take-Two distributed the hugely successful Red Dead Redemption back in 2010, and though all’s been quiet on the Western Front regarding a follow-up to the game, Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has confirmed that it is a permanent part of the company’s plans moving forward. Whether or not this means that a Red Dead Redemption 2 (or a Red Dead 3, to be more specific) is in the works remains to be seen, though it’s already been confirmed that the game’s developer Rockstar is working on a game for the PS4 and Xbox One.
Zelnick said: “I pretty much know the ones that I can assure you are permanent. It’s obvious that GTA is a permanent franchise as long as we keep delivering this incredible quality; it seems quite obvious that Red Dead is a permanent franchise, again with the same caveat, or Borderlands, for example, and NBA and others.”
Zelnick also spoke of the future of the BioShock franchise since the closure of its previous developers Irrational Games, saying: “We haven’t given any color on how you should think about [BioShock] yet except we do believe it’s beloved; we think it’s important [and] certainly something that we’re focused on; something 2K Marin will be responsible for shepherding going forward.
“I think there’s a lot of upside in that franchise. It hasn’t necessarily been realized yet.”
2K Marin was previously responsible for the development of BioShock 2, which split critics and fans down the middle. We’re hesitant about them taking control of the series from here on out, especially considering the studio’s last game was the underwhelming The Bureau: XCOM Declassified, but if Take-Two can sense more profitability in the series moving forward then that should indicate the developer has something up its sleeve for the future. That, or it’s simply going to add tacked-on multiplayer again with overpriced DLC.
