The 5 Biggest Gaming Announcements of Comic-Con 2014

Comic-Con 2014  has sadly come to a close. It was a big year with announcement for people of all hobbies: comics, films, and most import to us, gaming.

After heading back from the San Diego Convention Center, we gathered a list of the announcements made during the week, and tried to choose the top five. Below you can see which news items stole the spotlight at the show, and what you should know about each of them.

The Last of Us Movie Protagonists Confirmed

The Last of Us is one of the most previous video games of our time, and now it’s getting the big screen treatment.

Neil Druckmann and Sam Raimi have managed to cast not only Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams to play as Ellie, but Evil Dead‘s Bruce Campbell. It’s really the perfect match for these two characters who defined the game. You can even argue that the personalities and dialog between these two characters is what made The Last of Us as good as it was. Hopefully Maisie and Bruce can capture that. It’s certainly a tall order.

The film is at least a year from arriving in theaters, but there’s very little chance that it’ll disappoint with writing and direction being in the hands of Druckmann, one of the most important figures behind The Last of Us.

Mass Effect 4 Gets Detailed

Although Mass Effect 4 was officially announced at E3 this year, Comic-Con was treated as a much bigger stage for what you could argue is the most anticipated upcoming game.

We now know that the vehicle Mako will be making a return, and might be as important as it was in the original Mass Effect. Apparently, it’ll be customizeable, and used to traverse large-scale open environments. Think Mass Effect 1 but with next-gen graphics.

Several concept images were shown, which included the human protagonist, who is no longer Commander Shepard.

Mass Effect 4 is looking like a grand RPG adventure, and EA has emphasized that it isn’t rushing to get it out the doors. As such, we won’t be seeing it until at least 2016.

The Walking Dead Season 3 Announced

The Walking Dead‘s TV series has hit mainstream like a sledgehammer, but its video game adaptation has fared quite well itself. It’s wrapping up its second season after an award-winning first season. Now, a third season is in the concept stages.

The announcement was made during the Skybound Entertainment panel at Comic-Con, and was met with audience roar.

It’s unknown if Clementine will be part of the season. We’ll find out in 2015 when it releases, similarly in episodic fashion.

Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor’s Release Date Moved Forward

If there’s one game you might not know about, but should, it’s Middle-earth Shadow of Mordor. It’s a massive RPG built by Monolight Productions, and set in The Lord of the Ring‘s universe.

It turns out that development is actually ahead of schedule, so it is now planned to release on September 30th. That’s a good thing in many ways, most notable of which that October is over-packed with games. Now the month, can breath.

Given its release date is only two months away, Shadow of Mordor could very well end up being the next-generation’s first epic RPG adventure.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection isn’t Tampering with Originals

While Halo: The Master Chief Collection will improve the graphical fidelity of all four games in its package, 343 Industries is being careful not to tamper with the original gameplay, so much in-fact that minor glitches in the multiplayer mode will be present… intentionally.

As much as it sounds like laziness, 343 Industries’ Frank O’Connor says “for every person irritated, there are five who love that stuff”. It’s definitely a love it or hate it move, but the nostalgia is going to be in full force if nothing else.

Previously, the full map list for multiplayer in Halo: The Master Chief Collection was announced. Be sure to check it out and see if your personal favorites have made the cut.
