Stockholm dance-poppers Icona Pop, comprised of Caroline Hjelt and Aino Jawo, countered the bass-and-butt antics of time-slot competition Iggy Azalea at Austin City Limits on Saturday with a daytime set that showcased an evolution for the young duo.
Was it great? No, it was not great. The stiffness in stage presence definitely demands a production reboot, and the countless demands to “put your hands up” or “1, 2, 3, jump, jump, jump” were almost as grating as the “Austin can you feel it?! I can’t hear you!!” repeated fifty times.
Nevertheless, the girls delivered a danceable run of tracks to an ebulliently adoring crowd. And it was a damn sight better than a ghettofied Australian named Amethyst Amelia Kelly teaching teenagers how to be a “bad bitch” across the way.
