Google has unveiled the Google Nexus Player, a new set-top media box and gaming console that looks to rival the Amazon Fire TV.
The new Android device can run games from the Google Play Store, along with streaming media at 1080p. Retailing for $99, the Nexus Player also follows Amazon’s decision to sell the controller separately for $39, which is an odd move if the company really wants gamers to get on board with the device.
The device itself has a unique circular design, and comes equipped with the typical array of TV and film apps such as Netflix and Hulu Plus. It’ll also feature movies and shows from the Google Play Store, with Seth McFarlane’s A Million Ways to Die in the West being the top promoted film. We’re sure not if that’s a wise idea.
The device will run on a new 64-bit Imagination PowerVR graphics chip, boasting a 1.8Ghz quad-core intel processor with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. The unit also syncs with other Android devices, so you can pause a film and then watch it on your tablet later.
There will also be voice-recognition functionality, with users saying “Gravity” into the controller’s mic before telling the Nexus Player what they want to watch.
Similar to Chromecast, the Nexus Player also features casting support, allowing you to cast apps from your Android or iOS device, Mac or Windows laptop, or Chromebook to the TV.
