Earlier today Final Fantasy XIV’s first expansion was revealed: Heavensward. Among its laundry list of additions was the confirmation that new classes and jobs will be making their way to the game, but none were detailed. Now, it’s become clear that the most commonly requested job will be included.
During a presentation this evening, Naoki Yoshida and Mitsutoshi Gondai suggested that Dark Knight will be coming to Final Fantasy XIV using some Batman shirts and suggestive references, highlighting the name “The Dark Knight” from Batman’s moniker. It wasn’t an official reveal by any means, but they made it as clear as possible without saying it verbally.
It is likely that the class/job will be revealed on October 25th during a planned event. For now, no additional information is known.

The Dark Knight was one of the most popular classes in Final Fantasy XI, Square Enix’s previous MMO. It was an advanced job that specialized in heavy damage with scythes and two handed swords, as well as Black Magic.
The Dark Knight first appeared in the franchise during Final Fantasy 2 in the form of Leon, a playable character.
Given the current climate of jobs in Final Fantasy XIV, Dark Knight will most likely be implemented as a tank class, perhaps as a second option for the Marauder to Warrior tree (similar to how Arcanist can become a Summoner and a Scholar). There are currently only two tanks in the game, and consequently are in short supply. We already now that Thief/Ninja will be added which specialize in DPS, further saturating the list of DPS classes.
