Nintendo has halted production of the 3DS XL, the larger version of the original 3DS, in Japan, in order to further push sales of the New Nintendo 3DS XL.
It was originally thought that the new 3DS XL models would sit alongside old 3DS XL’s on store shelves, though Nintendo has swiftly stopped developing original 3DS XL consoles, though will continue to produce the original 3DS models.

The New 3DS XL is already out in Japan, though the console hasn’t yet made its way to the US or EU, where the original 3DS XL is still being produced.
There is no word from Nintendo on whether that will still be the case when the newer model of the handheld arrives, though given the swiftness in which Nintendo decided to pull the 3DS XL from production, it seems unlikely.
The New 3DS XL will boast a new analog stick, improved 3D technology and new ZL and ZR buttons, similar to those featured on the Wii U’s GamePad controller. The upcoming RPG Xenoblade Chronicles will exclusively release on the console, with it not appearing on any other models of the 3DS.
The New 3DS XL will also feature swappable faceplates and customizable home screens, allowing you to uniquely style your console with Nintendo-themed looks from Animal Crossing to Mario.
