Xbox One Hardware and Software Tops November 2014 NPD Group Results

Update: You can read about how many Xbox One, PS4, and Wii U consoles were sold during the month here.

Original: Corporate Vice President of Xbox Marketing Mike Nichols has confirmed that the Xbox One was the best-selling console during November 2014, not only in the United States, but the United Kingdom as well. Additionally, the Xbox One accounted for more game sales during the month than either the PS4 or Wii U.

Mike Nichols had the following to say:

We are committed to making Xbox the best place to play, with this year’s best games, the best community of gamers to play with, and terrific value. And we are amazed by the excitement Xbox fans have shown to start off this holiday. November set a new record for sales of Xbox One, and Xbox One was the best-selling console in the US and UK.* Response to the holiday lineup of games on Xbox One was incredible, with Xbox One fans buying more games in November in the U.S. than any other gen eight platform and enjoying over 357 million hours of gameplay globally. In fact, more fans logged into Xbox Live across Xbox One and Xbox 360, and enjoyed more entertainment, than any other month in the history of Xbox. We love to see the excitement from our fans and are grateful for their passion, support and contributions to the Xbox community.

* Based on data from NPD GFK ChartTrack

Microsoft attacked the market hard during November by instituting a $50 price drop for the Xbox One’s Assassin’s Creed Unity bundle. During Black Friday weekend the price was dropped $20 further at most retailers in the United States, some of which sold out of stock within a couple hours. Target even offered the $329 Xbox One Assassin’s Creed Unity bundle with a $50 gift card included with purchase.

Some have counted the Xbox One out of the current-gen console race after the PS4’s record-setting numbers during 2014. However, strong software support, frequent firmware updates, and a quick reduction of the Xbox One’s price point has made it very competitive during the most important time of the year.

Microsoft is expected to discontinue the price drop of the Xbox One in early January. If that happens, sales may die back down. Ultimately, price matters a lot.
