Interview: Grizfolk On Pre-Show Chants, The Danger of Safety Nets & More

Los Angeles alt-rock quintet Grizfolk is riding high on the strength of last month’s live-EP release From The Road (Virgin Records), after a high-profile tour from coast to coast with the U.K. hitmakers Bastille. Looking ahead to an action-packed 2015, the band is eyeing a full-album release while expanding their tour itinerary in the new year.

The band’s driving new single, “Hymnals,” which also appears on their From The Spark EP from early 2014, has received strong praise both in radio and review for its raw vocals with edgy electronic textures and captivating guitar work (listen at bottom). If their music sounds familiar, there’s a good chance you’ve heard it on MTV’s “Finding Carter” and “Generation Cryo,” The CW’s “The Originals” and “Hart of Dixie,” as well the end-title sequence song of DreamWorks’ Mr. Peabody & Sherman.

We had the boys into Crave’s office studios late last year to play a couple songs exclusively for CraveOnstage, as well as a conversation exploring the band’s current trajectory. We discuss the power of a truly good song when it’s stripped down to an acoustic base, the importance of leaping wholeheartedly into what you love, pre-show rituals and more.
