Jon Jones appears to be in big trouble yet again, this time following a felony hit-and-run.
The UFC light heavyweight champion was released on bond after turning himself in to Albuquerque, New Mexico police Monday after being wanted for leaving the scene of an accident.
Jones reportedly struck a car with 25-year-old pregnant woman inside, the accident breaking her arm.
According to the police report, witnesses saw a man fitting Jones’ description leave the silver SUV that struck the woman’s vehicle before stopping and returning to the car to grab a “large handful of cash.” The man then “shoved the cash into his pants” and fled the scene…
…Tixier identified the vehicle left behind as a rental. A marijuana pipe with marijuana inside it was found in the car. No other drugs were found.
If Jones is found guilty of leaving the scene of a crime, it’s a felony charge that could land him jail time.
The UFC says they are “still in the process of gathering facts.”
Jones (21-1) is scheduled to take on Anthony Johnson at UFC 187 on May 23 in Las Vegas. Many are wondering if Jones will be able to defend his title after this ordeal.
UFC released a statement Sunday night, saying:
“We are aware that the Albuquerque Police Department is interested in speaking to Jon Jones regarding his possible involvement in a motor vehicle accident. We are in the process of gathering facts and will reserve further comment until more information is available.”
Just last December Jones tested positive for cocaine while training for his fight against Daniel Cormier. He was also arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence in May 2012 after crashing his car into a telephone pole in Binghamton, New York. He pleaded guilty to a DWI charge and avoided jail time.
