Organizers of the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) have announced the next round of films that will be presented during the annual prestigious event in the Midnight Madness, Vanguard and documentary categories.
From music-related docs to edggy dramas, here’s just a few of the recently-announced TIFF projects that will be shown in September:
– Arcade Fire’s The Reflektor Tapes will premiere at TIFF just ahead of its worldwide release on September 23rd. “There were parts of the Reflektor tour where I think we, Arcade Fire, came the closest in our careers to putting on stage what we imagined in our heads,” the group said in a statement (National Post). “We were insanely lucky to have Kahlil Joseph documenting from the very beginning.”
– 11 Minutes comes from Polish master Jerzy Skolimowski (Four Nights with Anna, Essential Killing) and shuttles between the stories of several characters over the course of 11 consecutive minutes on a single day in Warsaw.
– 4 Quarters follows kids Willy and Jane as they struggle to stay afloat in Cape Breton, but at least they have each other — until Willy realizes the transactional nature of their relationship.
– “One I want to point out is this Turkish film Baskin, which I’m over the moon about,” said Colin Geddes, international programmer for TIFF (The Globe and Mail). “Any time we have a film from a country that has never played Midnight Madness is special, but this is different: It’s a very disturbing descent into hell. If you want a master class of how to manipulate an audience and create a tense atmosphere, come to the last 10 minutes of that.”
– Green Room is about a punk band on the road who find themselves besieged by neo-Nazi white supremacists in a backwoods Oregon club – the nail-biting thriller come from the director of the cult hit Blue Ruin, Jeremy Saulnier.
