In 1986, Alan Moore and artist Dave Gibbons redefined the superhero genre with Watchmen, which was published by DC Comics. In 2009, director Zack Snyder brought Watchmen to the big screen with an almost slavish devotion to the original material. Now, Snyder may get another shot at the Watchmen franchise.
Collider is reporting that Snyder has had meeting with HBO regarding a Watchmen TV series. However, it is unclear if the potential HBO incarnation would serve as a retelling of Moore’s story, a prequel series, or a never-before explored sequel series.
If HBO opts for the prequel approach, it wouldn’t be out of the question for some of the theatrical Watchmen to reprise their roles. DC released a series of Before Watchmen prequel comics in 2012 that examined the early days of The Comedian, Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, Ozymandias, Rorschach, and Dr. Manhattan.

However, there has never been a comic book sequel to Watchmen, and even DC Comics seems reluctant to mess with the ambiguous ending of Moore’s story. But given the serial nature of television, there’s no reason that a potential Watchmen series can’t serve as a prequel, a remake, and a sequel.
As Collider notes, a Watchmen TV series could potentially help fill a major gap on HBO once Game of Thrones comes to an end within the next few years. However, HBO is also very meticulous about which projects go forward, and there is no guarantee that Watchmen will get a series order. At this point, it’s just talk.
