Earlier today, word broke that Fox is developing Lethal Weapon for TV. But it’s not the only ‘80s property heading for a comeback!
According to The Hollywood Reporter, CBS put down “a hefty put-pilot commitment” to bring MacGyver back to television. Furious 7 director James Wan is executive producing the new MacGyver alongside Henry Winkler, the famous TV actor who executive produced the original MacGyver as well. MacGyver was created by Lee David Zlotoff in 1985 and it ran for seven seasons.
In the original series, Richard Dean Anderson played Angus MacGyver, an inventive secret operative who had an uncanny ability to create useful devices out of anything that happened to be on hand. MacGyver also went out of his way to avoid using guns or violence.
R. Scott Gemmill (NCIS: Los Angeles) is writing and executive producing the new MacGyver series, which will feature “a 20-something MacGyver as he gets recruited into a clandestine organization where he uses his knack for solving problems in unconventional ways to help prevent disasters from happening.”
Wan was previously attached to an attempted big screen adaptation of MacGyver that never went through. However, Wan will direct the pilot episode of the new MacGyver series if CBS elects to go forward with it.
