The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences just announced that the field of Documentary Short Subject contenders for the 88th Academy Awards has been narrowed to 10 films, of which five will earn Oscar nominations – three of the nominees are filmmakers from Toronto.
Seventy-four eligible entries were voted on and then narrowed down to the ten. My Enemy, My Brother” comes from Canadian Ann Shin, saw its European premiere this past summer and won the Sepanta Award for Best Documentary Short at the 8th Annual Iranian Film Festival. The film is also eligible for TIFF‘s 15th Annual Canada’s Top 10 Film Festival. Adam Benzine and his project Claude Lanzmann: Spectres of the Shoah looks at the life and work of French director Claude Lanzmann. And finally, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy is on the list for her latest film A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness, which follows a survivor of honour killings in her native Pakistan. “A Girl in the River: The Price of Forgiveness is a film that resonates with me deeply. It’s a film about the kinds of choices we women have in the world and how our lives are impacted by the decisions taken by others,” said Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy (Tribune).
